Point72 economist honored again

STAMFORD — Investors at Point72 Asset Management have learned in the past two years that their firm’s chief economist often makes uncommon predictions. They have also discovered that the same expert makes unusually reliable forecasts.

The consistency of Dean Maki’s analysis has earned him this year’s Lawrence R. Klein Award for Blue Chip Forecast Accuracy, an honor from Arizona State University’s business school that recognized Maki as the most accurate overall forecaster of the U.S. economy from 2012 through 2015. From a field of more than 50 top economists in the country, he was selected for his predictions of GDP and inflation growth and changes in the unemployment rate. He also won the accolade in 2013.

Among his projections, Maki predicted the respective 2015 rates for changes in real GDP growth and inflation and the national unemployment rate within a half-percentage point of the actual numbers.
